OMG - SPRING 2011?
by Brett Hersh
I do not know about you but I am so ready for the warmer weather! I hope everyone finished up the first quarter of 2011 well. I have been so encouraged by the many SACDV supplier and distributor members who are experiencing double digit growth over YTD 2010.
As the economy just starts to show some light, we in the promotional products business are right on the forefront of continuing the trend. We all need to make sure we educate the media as well as our end user clients on the benefits of promotional products to help increase business. Both ASI and PPAI have much information of the ROI and comparison of CPI (cost per impression) of promotional products when comparing them to traditional media sources.
I would strongly urge all our distributor partners to make this information and data part of your presentation when meeting with clients. Not only will it increase your level of professionalism but it will also help you close the deal.
Please mark your calendars for Promotions East on June 7-8 in Atlantic City, NJ. I am preparing for one of the best shows in years and there is much excitement about some of the new suppliers exhibiting as well as new events taking place in education and networking.
See you there and Happy Selling!
Sincerely,
Brett F. Hersh

Breaking News
Form 1099 Repeal Signed Into Law
In a victory for the promotional products industry, President Obama signed into law a bill repealing the Form 1099 information reporting expansion.
“Today, I was pleased to take another step to relieve unnecessary burdens on small businesses by signing H.R. 4 into law,” says President Obama. “Small-business owners are the engine of our economy and because Democrats and Republicans worked together, we can ensure they spend their time and resources creating jobs and growing their business, not filling out more paperwork. I look forward to continuing to work with Congress to improve the tax credit policy in this legislation and I am eager to work with anyone with ideas about how we can make healthcare better or more affordable.”
During PPAI’s Legislative Education and Action Day (LEAD), held in March 2011, 55 PPAI volunteer leaders, staff and representatives traveled to the U.S. capitol to educate their elected officials on the pending legislation’s impact on the promotional products industry. The group represented 26 states, 21 regional associations and set 120 meetings with their senators and representatives. LEAD put members of the promotional products industry in the right place and at the right time to press legislators on the damage the Form 1099 reporting expansion would do to them and the business landscape. They found universal support for the repeal of 1099 reporting requirements among the senators and members of the House of Representatives that they spoke with, a sentiment reflected in the signing of H.R. 4 into law.
“It has been a long journey to convince Washington that the expansion of the Form 1099 information reporting requirement was a bad idea,” says John S. Satagaj, PPAI general counsel, and president and general counsel of the Small Business Legislation Council (SBLC), of which PPAI is a member, “but the important thing is that we stuck with it and we are pleased the repeal has been signed into law. Our thanks to all the business members of the SBLC member associations who wrote, called and visited their senators and representatives. Persistence paid off.”
The Comprehensive 1099 Taxpayer Protection and Repayment of Exchange Subsidy Overpayment Act repealed expensive and burdensome tax paperwork included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Its passing saves businesses from onerous tax paperwork and compliance burdens that would have substantially increased the costs of doing business. Small businesses would have been especially hard hit by the requirement, had it gone into effect. According to a Small Business Administration study, the cost of complying with the tax code is already 66 percent higher for small business as compared to large businesses and the Form 1099 reporting expansion would have dramatically increased those costs.
